Martin has a MBBCh (Cum Laude) University of The Witwatersrand, MSc University of Cape Town, Doctor of Medicine (MD) University of Cape Town. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. He is Professor of Sport and Exercise Medicine University of Pretoria, South Africa and Consultant Sports and Exercise Medicine Physician at the Sport and Exercise Medicine Clinic, Sports Science Institute of South Africa, Cape Town, South Africa. He is also Director of the FIFA Medical Center of Excellence, Cape Town and Director of the IOC Research Center, Pretoria. He is Medical Consultant to numerous national and international athletes and teams and a Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commision. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Sports Medicine and Editor-in-chief of the Olympic Textbook of Sports Medicine. He has published numerous scientific articles (over 300) in international Sports Medicine and national peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed scientific journals, and numerous chapters in Sports Medicine books.
