Mats Brittberg is a member of the Cartilage Research Unit at Gothenburg University and have been an orthopaedic surgeon at Region Halland Orthopaedics (Kungsbacka/Varberg) the last 30 years. Orthopaedic specialist 1985 and earned his PhD 1996. Mats Brittberg is a professor of orthopaedics connected to the Institution of clinical sciences and orthopaedic department, Gothenburg University. His research is on cartilage repair, main focus: autologous chondrocytes. He has numerous collaborations with other centers worldwide. Focus is now on joint preservation research and with dr. Konrad Slynarski, he is involved in the joint preservation project Preserva Movere.
Mats Brittberg has received several awards such as:
- The Swedish Medical Association Jubilee Medal in silver 1995
- The ICRS Genzyme Lifetime Achievement Award in cartilage research 2010
- The Shetty- Kim Foundation (SKF) Scientific award 2012
- The SKF and UK Cartilage Club’s Life time achievement Award 2014
- Polish Life time Award in cartilage research 2016
- The BASK (British Association for surgery of the knee) Silver medal for scientific and clinical achievements 2024
Mats Brittberg has been on the board of TESi and been chairing the ESSKA Cartilage Committee 2006-08. Since the start 1997, he has been working with ICRS, as a secretary, Vice-president and President (2006-2008) and finally Past-President (2008-2009). He is Editor-in-Chief for the journal ¨CARTILAGE, been an associate editor with ESSKA journal as well as being on the editorial board of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage and involved in several book projects as editor. Strategic leader of Aspetar Sports Cartilage Center in Doha, Qatar 2013-2018 and the godfather for the 2023 travelling ICRS Fellowship.
