Valentin Zdravko Markser was born in Croatia and studied Medicine and Philosophy in Germany, where he also played Handball in a German professional League for many years. His biggest athletic accomplishments were becoming national and European Champion with his team. Between 1990 to 1995 he was lecturer for Social Medicine at the Cologne University for Applied Sciences. From 2010 to 2018 he was a board member of Robert Enke Foundation. In 2010 he initiated the foundation of the Department of Sports Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. In 2011, he introduced the concept of Sports Psychiatry in the German scientific literature and published the first German book on Sports Psychiatry in 2019. Since 2019 he is with the German Society for Sports Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. His career and experiences as a former sportsman prompted Markser to establish Sport Psychiatry, a medical discipline for reinforcing mental health in high performance sport. As a supplemental aspect of sports psychiatry, he works to establish exercise and healthy sport as therapy for mental health symptoms and disorders. He is working in his private practice for Sports Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, Psychosomatic and Psychoanalysis in Cologne in Germany.
